The Pretty Things were one of the wildest R&B groups of the mid 60s, making the Rolling Stones look like kittens for all the trouble they caused. Just seeing how long their hair was in 1965 you could tell they were trouble. Guitarist Dick Taylor got his start in an early incarnation of the Stones with Jagger & Richards. The Pretty's wild energy of the time is captured quite well on their debut album, 34 minutes of pure unadulterated r&b sleaze. It's the good kind of sleaze. The manic rhythm section and rollicking guitar are all guided by vocalist Phil May, whose raspy warbling and howling seem to suit the tunes just fine and gave them that extra edge over many of the other British R&B outfits of the time.
