With The Colour of Spring, the band started moving away from synths and electronic drums and matured vastly in their songwriting. The partnership between bandleader Mark Hollis and newly hired producer and collaborator Tim Friese-Greene began to bear fruit.

The first single from the album "Life’s What You Make It" was a huge worldwide hit and rightly so. This is a brilliant song with a hypnotic low-end piano progression, pounding beat (though not in a headbanging kinda way), memorable guitar line from Peter Gabriel’s regular guitarist David Rhodes and coated with oceans of Hammond Organ by guest Steve Winwood.

This hit increased EMI’s confidence in the band to the point where they were given carte blanche to work on their next album. The band also started to experiment in a quieter, more atmospheric vein.

"April 5th" is built on a simple tambourine and tuned noise rhythmic pattern, impressionistic piano chords are overlayed with layers of arabesques and ornaments from the Variophon – a German electronic instrument designed to imitate wind instruments. It has a unique sound which the band has used extremely well, not really playing specific tunes but dancing around sometimes in seemingly random fashion creating a distinctive atmosphere. String pads and swells of Hammond slide in and out, flecks of dobro colour the landscape which slowly fades away as Hollis incomprehensibly intones into the distance.
