AMMONIA - Eleventh Avenue 2LP
$44.95
Grunge that is spatial and alive, this is so much better than Mint 400. It's typically mid-90s indie grunge, yes, and also quite decent.
Title track "Eleventh Avenue" coasts in at track one with smooth, breathy, boyish vocals, maybe even vulnerable, bricked up against a smoothly slamming guitar drone to trailblaze out a sound that is dominating and sneering and yet also somehow entrancing. Other notables are kicking "Keep On My Side", plus the despairing emptiness of "Keeping My Hands Tied", which made it on to the soundtrack of movie Occasional Coarse Language. The sound may be cacophonous and even apocalyptic here and there, but in a kind of Smashing Pumpkins-like way there is also some quiet & forlorn sections of acoustic guitar that sound emotional, perhaps even fragile and a bit burned out.
