So with Gold Record potentially tapping into similar impulses - it's impressive how Callahan has enhanced and streamlined his storytelling from Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest while still bringing a lot of expansive and wry details to the forefront. A big factor here is the production, which brings back some of Apocalypse’s lingering instability in the shaky acoustic lines and shuddering grooves, but now there are distant horns and a mix that feels larger and more expansive.
