MYSTERY KINDAICHI BAND - The Adventures Of Kindaichi LP
Highly recommended.
Catalogued as a film soundtrack, yet not really true - despite the fact that there are several feature films about Kindaichi and an anime about his grandson, this is a so-called "imaginary soundtrack" where each track corresponds to one of the more famous Kindaichi mysteries.
This is the absolute best kind of tight, melodic Japanese jazz-funk, but with two distinguishing factors: for one, this takes a lot of inspiration from traditional Japanese folk and classical music, which was kind of a rarity in a Japanese scene that at the time actively rejected traditionalism.
And also there are all sorts of goofy horror-movie sound effects and melodic stabs on this too, which is just amazing, a great album for Halloween.
And look at that cover!
