In the Red Records rarely disappoints and the latest from Kid Congo's group is no exception. Following up 2009's Dracula Boots and done in an eccentric, psychedelic way that only Kid Congo Powers could do, he shows all the kiddies of this generation how to do the garage rock thing. I mean, he's only been doing it for 30+ years. Gorilla Rose is made up of hypnotic jams, distorted vocals, haunting, and oddly funny spoken word bits, danceable anthems, plenty of reverb, and a Chicano garage rock influence. Chock full of nostalgia, inspired by life in LA as part of the 70's punk scene with The Screamers and drag artist/performer Gorilla Rose, is this bizarre soundtrack, which is as psychedelic as garage rock can get without being labeled full-blown psychedelia. The music is as intriguing as you can imagine it is hanging out with flamboyant individuals in seedy cities, soaking up the environment and listening to interesting stories on hot summer evenings.
