The third entry in their discography titled Heavy Rocks, the previous two records with this title were designed to be some of Boris' deepest and most serious dives into the world of metal.

Heavy Rocks '22 differs from its predecessors by being less reliant on classic stoner metal. While the overall tone of density and musical violence is still there in bulk, this entry in the Heavy Rocks series sees Boris tackle noise rock to a more noteworthy extent than they have in some time. This also means that the band are willing to work with a number of rock and metal subgenres that are affiliated with noise rock to some degree. This includes, but is not limited to, industrial-adjacent sounds as well as the Japanese hardcore punk scene.

One could certainly argue that these are all sounds that Boris have dabbled with in the past. After all, fan-favourite albums from the band such as 2005's Pink have been at least partially attached to these same influences. However, Heavy Rocks '22 still manages to stand out from the Boris albums that came before it by coming across as a love letter to a number of different classic niches in hard rock and metal while simultaneously combining these sounds in a way that comes across as remarkably fresh even for the ever-evolving Boris.
