Primordial Arcana is positively riffy compared to any other Wolves in the Throne Room album. Naturally, that is in the scope of atmospheric black metal, so don't expect to hear an array of killer riff after killer riff, but the fact still remains that the album shines the spotlight on the guitars in a way that is pretty foreign to Wolves in the Throne Room. Additionally, the band brings the song lengths down considerably.

Primordial Arcana will still feel really familiar to anyone who's heard any Wolves in the Throne Room post-Black Cascade (2009). There's an overall melancholic, woodsy feel to the material that sometimes reaches for triumphant climaxes with great success. Trem-picked black metal riffs are still the real player here, to no one's surprise, and the synths give the material an ethereal twist at apt points.
