SISTER NANCY - One, Two LP
Dancehall is a strange and hard to pin-down genre. It's similar to hip-hop but comes from an entirely different culture. Rather the total personal independence and originality championed in hip-hop, dancehall artists are re-inventing their own music, their contemporaries, all while taking influence from disco, reggae and rocksteady.
Sister Nancy is unique, there aren't many women in dancehall, even all of Jamaican music doesn't leave much space for female musicians. Though it's easy to boil her down to a one-hit-wonder, the very fact that "Bam Bam" was popular even at the time was just what the genre needed.
Every song here is pretty laid back but it communicates energy so effortlessly.
