TRICKY WOO - Sometimes I Cry LP
Highly recommended.
Formed in 1995, Tricky Woo was conceived as part tribute to the pantheon of rock, part conceptual art. Influenced by early rock n roll, British punk, Crypt and Estrus Records, the band were relative lone wolves within Montreal’s tiny garage rock scene.
From 1997 to 1999, they released three albums, Sometimes I Cry being the 3rd and described by NME as “a new hope for rock n roll“, the latter would become their defining cult masterpiece.
During that time, Tricky Woo earned a reputation for playing particularly wild shows in unusual locations such as a pizza parlour or Montreal’s legendary porno theatre Cinéma L’amour, and became college radio darlings with this album being number one on the Canadian campus and community radio charts in 1999.
Tricky Woo changed the face of the Canadian rock scene forever with their Chuck Berry-sounding licks and 70s punk-infused raw garage rock turned heavy, high-energy acid punk reminiscent of Blue Cheer and the MC5.
