Billy Nomates has quickly become one of the most exciting young females in British music and the caulkhead’s latest EP is a continuation of her endearing energy. Each of the 4 ½ tracks here is energetic, endearing and delivered with as much sass and swagger as some of the most established females in rock. And it’s this grimy but glamourous take on post-punk that make’s her stand out from the aggressiveness of an IDLES, the passiveness of a Fontaines or the eccentricity of a Black Midi. Post-punk is the biggest scene in the country right now but Billy spins it in a way no one else is doing, this is best seen in Heels where the sticky electronic melodies give the song massive Blondie-like pop appeal without sacrificing her girthy voice. But her influences don’t stop there, Emergency Telephone brings an IDM leaning drum groove that’s chaos contrasts a grounded guitar riff wonderfully.
