RED RIVER DAVE - Authentic Hillbilly Ballads And Topical Songs - Volume One (1954 - 1976) LP
Nicely priced. One copy only.
Limited edition deluxe gatefold.
Over 20 years of work from one of the most enigmatic singers in the American underground – an artist who was part country, part folk – and managed to work very strongly in topical themes of the time! Red River Dave may not have cracked the charts or Nashville, but over the course of the rare singles here, he managed to deliver songs on hippie murders, Patty Hearst, the John Birch Society, Lee Harvey Oswald, Vietnam, Marilyn Monroe, The Bay Of Pigs, and the death of Emmett Till! And while topical material was no stranger to both the folk and country market, Dave's performances here really take the whole thing to the next level – shunning some of the subtlety or wit of some of his contemporaries, and really just telling it like it is – mostly just using lively guitar or banjo accompaniment. As usual with Omni, the whole thing is a treasure trove of sounds we never would have discovered otherwise including "The Vietnam Guitar", "California Hippie Murders!" and "Flight Of Apollo 11".
