The darker and noisier side of shoegaze is a criminally untapped resource. Sure, your Cocteau Twins, Slowdives, and M83s are pretty and all, but the genre has the potential to make some beautifully dark atmospheres. And yet it’s extremely underrepresented: the bands that do fall into this subgenre either don’t do it all the time (like Yo La Tengo), vanished off the face of the earth (like Yuck), or both (like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club).

For a while in the early ‘10s, APTBS were the undisputed kings of this genre, but after a phenomenal first three albums, they sharply dipped in quality before, well, vanishing off the face of the earth.

However, they finally returned in 2022 with an album that was not just a triumphant return, but arguably their best work yet.

See Through You combines what made their first three albums so great with the redeeming qualities of Transfixiation and Pinned, combining their signature wall of guitars with electronic elements. The result is one of the best shoegaze records of the decade so far.
