A whole nation terrified. A global economy built on war, teenagers throwing away their lives for a country that doesn't even know their name. Doping up to forget about your brother who was shot. A kid crying in the arms of his mother, absolutely stoned out of his mind, babbling about war and death and everything else.

Of course, as Wayne Coyne always does, he manages to end this album on a positive note, with 'My Religion Is You' being a cute little sing-a-long about his absolute favorite thing to write a song about, love. But there's no mistaking it, this is easily the most pessimistic album from The Flaming Lips yet. At every turn, there's paranoia, dread, fear, so much fear. Everyone's terrified of conflict. Everyone feels helpless and alone. Everyone's poor and hungry, selling drugs just to get by. A nice trip is about the closest thing to the 'American Dream' these people have.
