I'm not a Beefheart obsessive (I don't own out takes compilations and obscure bootlegs and I don't even rate 'Trout Mask Replica' which is considered by the devout to be his finest hour) I do however think this is one of the greatest albums ever made! There's just something so wonderfully eccentric and leftfield but at the same time accessible about the whole thing. The lyrical content is as characteristically bonkers as ever ( 'Big eyed beans from Venus...' ) but from the shambling soul shuffle of 'Nowadays a Woman's gotta Hit a Man' and the frenzied 'Sun Zoom Spark' right through to 'Golden Birdies' this for me delivers Beefheart's most satisfying collection of songs.
