When Ali Farka Touré first heard John Lee Hooker he mentioned that: "This is something that belongs to us." Farka didn't like to be called a blues musician, in his own words: "my music is older than the blues.” Years before becoming a staple of "world music," this recording is Farka stripped down to the raw elements. It sounds very fresh, yet also primordial. It's livelier than the later commercialized recordings, done in environs where Farka complained of "bad energy."
