ARP - Drifts LP
Highly recommended.
Featuring collaborations with Patrick Belaga, LEYA's Marilu Donovan and Japanese film composer Takuma Watanabe, Alexis Georgopolis's latest ARP chapter is a suite of ambient-adjacent digital abstractions and resampled musical vapors.
If his last album, 2022's 'New Pleasures', was a gear-heavy, cyberpunk-inspired take on city pop, 'Drifts' shuttles Georgopolis forward on the timeline, towards the functional ambient of the Kankyō Ongaku and the more disruptive noise of '00s glitch.
Described as "one part ambient classical" and "one part club-adjacent ambience", it's hard to fully agree; Georgopolis more readily uses his studio smarts to shred a hard drive's worth of samples - of piano, harp and strings - turning the fragments into pretty, familiar vignettes that have never been near a sticky dancefloor.
