Highest recommendation.
This pill n' booze-fueled explosion of cacophony is probably the most fun a suicide note ever had in being written. Flipper is most known for their minimalistic, atonal variation on The Stooges' "L.A. Blues," "Sex Bomb," which is the closing track on Generic.
This "life-affirming" song is pitted up against more dour material such as the nauseating opener "Ever," which might be the best song ever about a person lacking love in their life and how it feels to see other people in love (best encapsulated in the lyric "Ever look at a flower and hate it"!).
"Shed No Tears" shows just how groovy Flipper can be. "Living for the Depression," is the most indicative of Flipper's philosophy on this record, it sounds almost gleeful in its abandon, but still it seethes. Flipper never repeated the same level of success, but I thank them every day that they got it completely right once.
This record, while considered "punk," probably rests better aside "alternative" records like Double Nickels on the Dime and New Day Rising. Tons of indie bands have attempted to recreate Flipper’s mix of acidic guitar, metallic bass sludge and sardonically brilliant lyricism, using the seemingly effortless template they pioneered; however, the effect usually drives listeners right back to Generic. While most of their contemporaries wilt under direct comparison, No Trend, the Butthole Surfers, feedtime and Church Police are a few who can stand the frigid heat.
