Mojave 3 took a bold step forward with Spoon and Rafter, expanding beyond their folk and alt-country roots into richer, more adventurous territory. Recorded at the band's studio on the Cornish coast and produced with Mark Van Hoen, the album introduces electronics, glockenspiel, melodica and layered studio techniques inspired by classic pop production.

The group's growing interest in arrangement and experimentation led to some of their most ambitious recordings, including the multi-part 'Bluebird of Happiness', assembled from separately recorded sections using early digital editing technology. The result is a colourful and inventive collection that remains a favourite among the band members themselves.

Its melodic appeal also reached a wider audience, with both 'Bluebird of Happiness' and 'Bill Oddity' appearing in episodes of the television series The O.C.
