After original guitarist Mick Bolton (who had been with UFO for their first two, more Space Rock oriented albums) a succession of guitarists were tried out (including Bernie Marsden who would later find a place with Whitesnake) by UFO to replace him. Until 18 year old German guitar prodigy Michael Schenker was recruited away from the fledgling Scorpions, and the rest as they say, is history.

Schenker's searing muscular playing had an immediate affect on the direction of the band and it shows to great and wonderful effect in Phenomenon, which is a blend of the earlier albums gorgeous meanderings and the brutally focused Hard Rock that would become UFO's stock in trade during the Schenker era.

Phenomenon spawned many of the songs that have been staples of UFO sets ever since, including the scorchingly powerful epic "Rock Bottom".
